McDavid won the 2016-17 Art Ross Trophy with 100 points, including an NHL-leading 70 assists. Having turned 20 years old in January, only Sidney Crosby at age 19 (2007) and Wayne Gretzky (13 days younger) at age 20 (1981) were younger Art Ross Trophy winners.
McDavid scored two goals and two assists in the Oilers’ six-game defeat of the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
At 19 years and 266 days old, the Oilers entrusted their leadership to the Richmond Hill, Ontario, native whom they selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, making him the youngest captain in National Hockey League history on October 5, 2016.
McDavid did not disappoint. The Oilers clinched their first Stanley Cup playoff berth since 2006 on March 27, 2017, elevating McDavid into serious contention for the Hart Trophy as NHL Most Valuable Player.
McDavid burst onto the international hockey scene in 2013, when he played for the Canadian U18s at the IIHF World Championships.
