McDavid, in his first season as the Oilers' captain, the youngest captain in NHL history, accelerated his breakout season during this span. The second-year superstar gained control of the race for the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer and grabbed the league lead in assists.
McDavid became the youngest captain in National Hockey League history on October 5, 2016. At 19 years and 266 days old, the Oilers entrusted their leadership to the Richmond Hill, Ontario, native whom they selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
And he did not disappoint. The Oilers clinched their first Stanley Cup playoff berth since 2006 on March 27, 2017 ... elevating McDavid into serious contention for the Hart Trophy as NHL Most Valuable Player.
